Voter registration deadline approaches for special election in South Hills, Peters
Residents who plan to vote in the April 2 special election in the 37th State Senatorial District must be registered by Monday.
Candidates are Democrat Pam Iovino and Republican D. Raja. Both are from Mt. Lebanon, and they are vying to replace Guy Reschenthaler, who is now serving in the U.S. Congress.
Registered voters who have moved or changed their name or party affiliation also must notify the elections office by that day.
Those qualified to vote must be a United States citizen at least one month prior to the election, a resident of Pennsylvania and the election district at least 30 days before the election, and 18 years of age on or before the day of the election.
Applicants needing to register to vote, or to change their name, address, or party affiliation may do so by using the state’s online voter registration process at www.votespa.com.
Applicants who have a driver’s license or PennDOT identification card can link their signature on file with PennDOT to their voter record. The record will then be electronically transferred to the county elections office for processing and approval.
Applicants who do not have a Pennsylvania driver’s license or identification card may upload a digital image of their signature or print, sign, and mail the completed online application to the elections office, Suite 206, 100 W. Beau St., Washington, PA 15301.
The elections office will remain open until 5 p.m. Monday to accept hand-delivered voter registration forms.
The 37th Senatorial District includes Peters Township in Washington County plus several municipalities in Pittsburgh’s South Hills and airport corridor.
“We thought we’d be seeing more absentee ballot applications,” said Melanie Ostrander, Washington County elections director.
“We’ve had a handful of people call. It seems what people are concerned about now are petitions.”
The last day to circulate and file nominating petitions for the May 21 municipal primary is March 12. Ostrander reminded those filing petitions that the Washington County elections office will close that day at its regular time, 4:30 p.m.
