Charleroi Area schools went on lockdown Friday morning, due to reports of an armed suspect in the area.

Superintendent Edward Zelich said local police pulled over a man near the school district’s campus about 9:15. The man grabbed bags from his car and ran into the woods behind the campus, where the district’s elementary, middle and high schools are located.

Police apprehended the suspect at 10 a.m., Zelich said, at which point the lockdown was lifted. Ringgold Elementary School South, which is a few miles away on Alexander Street in Carroll, also went briefly on lockdown for a “community safety issue” around the same time. The lockdown was soon lifted, according to the school’s Twitter account.
