The Allegheny County Health Department announced Wednesday that a raccoon killed by a dog in the South Hills has tested positive for rabies, the first in the county this year.

The raccoon was involved in a fight recently with the dog on Shenandoah Drive in Upper St. Clair and brought to the health department’s facility where it tested positive for rabies. The dog was vaccinated for rabies before the encounter, the health department said.

The health department confirmed rabies in 25 animals in the county last year, which included 12 raccoons, nine bats, two cats, one fox and a groundhog.
