Mascots challenge Cal U’s Blaze and lose
CALIFORNIA – If the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Sauerkraut Saul let California University of Pennsylvania’s mascot win a race Tuesday, the giant pierogi wasn’t talking.
Aside from Saul not having a voice, the Pirates fifth-inning sideline attraction wasn’t on home turf during competitions featuring four furry pals, including Cal U.’s Blaze.
“Everybody is asked to do their best,” the university’s associate director of admissions, Amanda Jo Magdic, insisted before the games began in the Convocation Center.
The mascots were brought together at Cal U. as part of a fun admissions event designed to attract freshmen, university spokeswoman Christine Kindl said.
“We wanted a way to reach out to underclassmen,” Magdic added.
The mascots, including Chic-fil-A’s cow and Buzz from BeeGraphix custom apparel based in Fredericktown, also participated in a game of musical chairs and Frisbee and swimming pool noodle float tosses.
Blaze, otherwise known as the Roman God of Fire, was victorious in most of the mascot challenges.
The cow appeared too clumsy to race, and it stood with human assistance on the sideline. Saul came in second and Buzz pulled up the rear.
Other than bragging rights, there were no other rewards for Blaze, Magdic said.
