A police chase in Canton Township early Thursday morning ended when the driver crashed a stolen vehicle into two houses.

State police began pursuing a white GMC Sierra Denali with no license plate traveling east on Fayette Street about 2 a.m.

The driver, identified as Akili Racheed Sutton, 40, of 240 Linn Ave., Washington, allegedly fled and struck multiple parked vehicles.

Police said the truck had been stolen from Budd Baer Automotive in Washington.

The chase continued for about another mile, and Sutton crashed the truck into houses located at 481 and 489 E. Wayne St., police said.

Police said Sutton drove through multiple intersections without stopping and struck two vehicles on Addison Street near its intersection with McCarrell Avenue.

The home at 481 was vacant, according to police, and the residents of 489 were uninjured.

Russ Porter, who has lived at 489 E. Wayne St. for about seven years, said the crash woke them up.

Porter said the crash shifted the walls of the home, and made it difficult to open the door.

“We could hardly get out of the house,” Porter said.

The crash knocked out the electricity, Porter said, and caused heavy damage to the house.

When Porter got outside, police were arresting Sutton at the side of the house.

According to the criminal complaint, Sutton was attempting to flee on foot and police used a Taser to get him to stop.

Sutton allegedly told police, “Someone gave me the truck.” Police said they found a plastic bag in Sutton’s wallet containing a substance they suspect to be cocaine.

State police charged Sutton with driving under the influence, receiving stolen property, fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance and several summary traffic offenses, including driving without a license.

Sutton was transported to Washington Hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the crash.
