Van Gogh tribute week begins Monday at Phipps Conservatory
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh is hosting a special weeklong tribute to Vincent van Gogh starting Monday.
Van Gogh’s dramatic landscapes and still-life paintings defined an artistic era and forged a new visual language to connect with the natural world. During Phipps’ van Gogh tribute, guests can experience Phipps’ “Van Gogh in Bloom” exhibit in addition to a series of events and activities centered on van Gogh’s life, artistry and impact. All are free with Phipps admission.
During the tribute week, and while supplies last, guests will receive a free commemorative art print of Phipps’ floral display inspired by van Gogh’s “Self Portrait with Straw Hat” painting. The keepsake is printed on 100% recycled stock and is suitable for framing.
Other events happening as part of the van Gogh tribute include “Biophilia in Pittsburgh: Van Gogh in the Garden,” on Aug. 1 at 5:30 p.m. Jordyn Melino, Phipps’ associate director of exhibits, and Lucy Stewart, associate curator of education at the Carnegie Museum of Art, discuss how nature inspired van Gogh’s paintings and how van Gogh inspired Phipps’ displays. An RSVP is required to attend.
Then, on Aug. 2, “Van Gogh Movie Night” will happen at 7 p.m. Phipps will host a free-with-admission screening of “Loving Vincent,” which explores van Gogh’s life and work using a process in which each shot has been rendered as an oil painting in the master’s signature style. An RSVP is required.
Guided tours of Phipps’ “Van Gogh in Bloom” exhibit will be available Aug. 2, 3 and 4, at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. daily. An RSVP is required.
