South Fayette to host 2019 National Student Council Conference

2 min read

Student leaders from across the United States will converge June 24-26 at South Fayette Township High School for the annual National Student Council Conference.

With the theme “Forging Student Leaders,” inspired by the Pittsburgh area’s history of steel production, the conference will draw hundreds of students and student council advisers to sharpen their leadership skills and connect with peers from around the country. This is the first time the conference has been held in the region since 1985, when it was hosted by Bethel Park High School.

Dan Pollock, a member of the Class of 2019 at South Fayette and one of two student co-chairpeople for the conference, is no stranger to the event, as his grandfather, George Meyer, was the conference host adviser for Bethel Park in 1985.

South Fayette applied last year to host the conference for National Student Council, which has representation in more than 7,000 schools nationwide.

“Our student council, along with our entire school and community, is thrilled to be hosting the best student leaders and their advisers on our campus,” said Felix Yerace, South Fayette student council co-adviser and conference host adviser. “We are a small school of just over 1,000 high school students, but this year alone we have raised over $200,000 for charity, and we are very proud of what our organization has accomplished and know that we are ready for this major event.”

Four Diamonds, South Fayette’s Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils charity partner, will be featured as the conference charity. The organization covers medical expenses related to cancer care not covered by insurance for eligible children.

National Student Council is a longstanding program of National Association of Secondary School Principals, which also administers National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society.

“We could not be more pleased that the National Student Council Conference will be hosted at South Fayette High School in 2019,” executive director JoAnn Bartoletti said. “NASSP is deeply committed to developing student leaders, and the model that South Fayette provides makes the school the ideal site for this prestigious event.”

Program plans are still in development and will include a mix of accomplished advisers, students, dignitaries and nationally recognized speakers.
