A Penn Hills man has been identified as the person who was killed in an accident Thursday night when his dirt bike veered into a guardrail along Interstate 79 in North Strabane Township.

The Washington County coroner’s office said the rider, 33-year-old Steven F. Macauley, began to exit I-79 north near the Houston exit at 8:21 p.m. He then tried to ride back onto the highway from the exit when he apparently lost control of the machine.

Officials said he was wearing a helmet. He was pronounced dead there. A ruling on the cause and manner of death is pending.

The township fire department and Canonsburg Ambulance assisted at the scene. State police are investigating.
