A burning motor on an air-conditioning unit caused the Sam’s Club in South Strabane Township to be evacuated briefly Tuesday morning.

The smoke from the motor, located on the building’s roof, activated the store’s fire alarms about 10:15 a.m., according to South Strabane Fire Chief Scott Reese.

“There was a motor on the roof that burned up,” Reese said.

Employees and customers waited outside across the parking lot as the fire department investigated the cause of the smoke.

By 10:45 a.m., Sam’s Club employees were preparing to resume business and allow customers back inside.
