Harassment charge dropped against Cumberland police chief

1 min read

A harassment charge filed by state police against Cumberland Township Police Chief Bryan Smith was dropped in court Friday morning.

Smith, 30, of Carmichaels, was cited following a domestic disturbance at a residence at 94 E. Lincoln St., Waynesburg, May 25. According to the citation, Smith allegedly had been arguing with a woman, Samantha Lawson, about 11:20 p.m. at the residence, before he allegedly grabbed the woman by the arms and threw her on the bed.

Lawson and Smith both appeared in District Judge David Balint’s courtroom Friday morning for a summary trial, where she declined to testify. The investigating trooper told the court that Lawson didn’t want the charge to go forward.

Balint dropped the charge, to which Smith had pleaded not guilty.
