Police surround Chartiers residence
Chartiers Township police and other agencies spent hours outside a residence on Monday night before the man committed suicide.
Township police Chief James Horvath said two on-duty patrol officers initially were dispatched to an apartment on Cummins Avenue in the village of McGovern shortly before 7 p.m. following a 911 call from the man’s brother, who said his family member was talking about his desire to kill himself.
“It’s not the ending we wanted,” Horvath said.
The township police officers spoke to the man before calling Horvath, who went to speak to the man himself. Horvath later called in other agencies, including the Washington Regional SWAT unit, whose negotiators also spoke to him. A some point, Horvath said the man stopped answering. Officials went inside about 1 a.m. to discover him dead.
Horvath said the man was alone in the residence for the duration of the incident, and didn’t endanger anyone else with his actions. He declined to release his name.
“When I talked to him, he stated that he did not want to hurt anyone else,” Horvath said.
Other agencies that also responded included the local fire department, state police, the Washington County public safety department and Canonsburg Ambulance Service.
