South Strabane establishes sustainability committee
South Strabane Township supervisors have established a new committee to advise them on environmental issues in the township.
The sustainability committee, or “green team,” will research environmental, sustainability and beautification strategies for the township and make recommendations to the supervisors, according to a township news release. They will also be tasked with public engagement and education of “stormwater solutions.”
“The township is seeking committed, caring, and knowledgeable volunteers to serve on this inaugural committee,” the release said.
The idea to establish the committee came from Supervisor Bracken Burns, who had created a similar “green team” at the county level when he previously served as Washington County commissioner.
“The concept is to put a group of people around the table who have a common interest in things that fall under the green banner,” he said.
He said they’ll look into recycling efforts, litter pickup and anything that deals with the use of natural resources. One issue they plan to research is what the township can do with glass, now that it’s no longer accepted with main recycling streams, Burns said.
The township already has six to eight people to serve on the committee, Burns said, but more people are welcome if interested.
Anyone wanting to serve on the committee can contact the township’s assistant manager, Patrick Conners, at pconners@southstrabane.com.
