PennDOT office fire in Greene County may cost ‘millions’
A fire at the state Department of Transportation office in Franklin Township, Greene County, Monday evening may have caused millions of dollars worth of damage.
Waynesburg-Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company Chief Jeff Marshall said state police is handling an investigation into the fire’s origin.
“The state police were asked to investigate it based on the high value lost. They’re not looking at it as a suspicious fire,” Marshall said. “There has got to be millions of dollars of damage there.”
According to Marshall, the fire is believed to have started in the building’s garage area. He said most of the vehicles and equipment were outside of the building.
“If it was wintertime, they probably would have more stuff inside. It could have been a lot worse,” Marshall said.
Marshall described the building as “U-shaped,” and said the damage inside was severe.
“The tops of the U just had some smoke damage,” he said.
The fire was extinguished by 8 p.m. Monday. As it was a holiday, no one was inside the building, and there were no injuries.
