Two dogs were rescued from a house fire in Washington Tuesday.

City and North Strabane Township firefighters responded to 735 Fayette St. about 2:15 p.m. after receiving a report of smoke coming from the roof and basement.

City fire Chief Gerald Coleman said the resident of the house was not home at the time of the fire, but his dogs were inside when crews arrived. He said both dogs were given oxygen and are expected to recover.

Coleman said the fire appeared to have originated in the kitchen, but the cause is still unknown. He said that room was gutted and the rest of the house has heat, smoke and water damage. The state fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate.
