Man struck, killed by train in Charleroi
CHARLEROI – A Charleroi man was struck and killed early Wednesday by a train at a railroad crossing in his hometown.
The Washington County coroner’s office identified the victim as Anthony Lee Meyer, 22, who was killed near the Fifth Street crossing shortly before 4 a.m.
Meyer was pronounced dead at 5:08 a.m. near Third Street and Railroad Way, the coroner’s office said.
The cause and manner of Meyer’s death were pending further investigation, Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said.
The rail line is operated by Norfolk Southern.
The train was traveling from Graysville to Baltimore when Meyer was killed, Norfolk Southern spokeswoman Rachel McDonnell Bradshaw said.
“At Norfolk Southern, the safety of our employees and the communities we serve is our No. 1 priority, McDonnell Bradshaw said.
“Norfolk Southern reminds the public that it is extremely dangerous, and also trespassing, to walk on or within the right-of-way of railroad tracks. People should cross tracks only at designated crossings and use extreme caution at all times,” she said.
