What a way to start the week.

A combination of musical favorites and exemplary weather greeted guests of the Peters Township Parks and Recreation Department’s Senior Series Monday, with John Sarkis of the Skyliners sharing his vocal talents.

The program took place at Peterswood Park Amphitheater, where the grass in front of the stage has been lined off with a series of circles to promote proper social distancing.

Sarkis sang numerous audience requests in the style of classic crooners, including selections from his own group. The Skyliners, by the way, are celebrating 62 years of performance in 2020, with the current lineup also including Donna Groom, Mark Groom, John Sarkis, Jim Gregorakis and Eric Bruce.

The group originally featured vocalist Jimmy Beaumont (1940-2017), who sang lead on the hit “Since I Don’t Have You,” which reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959. Also reaching the Top 40 were subsequent releases “This I Swear” and “Pennies from Heaven.”

The Senior Series continues with harmonica player Charlie Barath performing at 10 a.m. Aug. 24 in the amphitheater. The free program includes light breakfast options, and guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Sponsoring the series is Jim Dolanch Team of Century 21 Frontier Realty, with team members among those in attendance for Sarkis’ concert.

Also for seniors, the Parks and Recreation Department presents summer picnics in the park, with two more on this year’s schedule.

On Aug. 12, the program is “Mental and Physical Wellness,” with Suzie Bode of the SilverSneakers health and fitness program. “Sweet September” with Sarris Candies is set for Sept. 9.

The events are from noon to 2 p.m. in Peterswood Park’s Shelter 4. The cost for a boxed lunch is $5. Because of safety considerations, no covered dishes will be permitted, and participants are advised to bring their own chairs to help practice social distancing.

Also with safety in mind, participation in the picnics is very limited, and registration is required by calling 724-942-5000 or emailing LMorris@peterstownship.com.

Masks and social distancing are encouraged at all Parks and Recreation Department events.
