SPHS Care Center STTARS Program aims at helping LGBTQ+ victims of sexual violence
Aware that the LGBTQ+ community is traditionally under served when it comes to sexual violence services, the SPHS Care Center STTARS (Sexual Trauma Treatment and Recovery Services) Program recently launched a “Sexual Violence Doesn’t Discriminate” campaign aimed at those who become victims.
“Our project is about making sure individuals in the LGBTQ+community know that there are free and discreet services for sexual violence survivors, whether the assault occurred recently, a year ago, or several years ago,” said Joanna Dragan, Supervisor of Sexual Violence Services/STTARS. “We must ensure that vulnerable populations such as this can access supports when needed.”
People who identify as LGBTQ+ have high rates of sexual violence victimization, but are less likely to file a criminal report, or to seek medical care, counseling and advocacy services.
Research shows that roughly half of all transgender people will be victims of sexual assault.
“Care Center STTARS Program staff members have been trained to work with several different under served populations, including survivors who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community.
“Our goal is to empower and educate survivors so that they can choose the paths to healing that are right for them,” Dragan said.
The STTARS Program provides free and confidential services to survivors of sexual violence and their significant others across Washington and Greene counties. Services include counseling, legal and medical advocacy, prevention education, and a 24-hour hotline.
The CARE Center STTARS Program offers free and confidential counseling and advocacy services for all survivors of sexual violence. Contact the STTARS Program at 724-229-5007 for assistance.
