Rumors that Kings along Route 19 would close circulated online ahead of the North Strabane Township zoning meeting Wednesday, during which the township denied Giant Eagle Inc.’s application to build a GetGo in the same plaza. “We are here to stay,” the Kings’ sign reads.

Earlier this year, Giant Eagle Inc. applied to build a GetGo in the same plaza as King’s restaurant along Route 19 in North Strabane Township, sparking rumors that the restaurant would be shuttered to make way for a gas station.

In a 3-2 vote Wednesday night, North Strabane Township’s zoning board denied Giant Eagle Inc.’s application to build a GetGo convenience store and gas station in the same plaza as King’s at Route 19 and McClelland Road.

In a 3-2 vote Wednesday night, the North Strabane Township zoning hearing board denied a request by Giant Eagle Inc. to build a GetGo convenience store and gas station along Route 19.

About two dozen North Strabane Township residents attended the zoning hearing board meeting, after news that a GetGo might open at Route 19 and McClelland Road sparked rumors online that the longstanding Kings restaurant was closing to make room for the gas station.

The rumors are false, according to a sign posted at Kings’s entrance, and North Strabane will not be getting a GetGo at this time.

Earlier this year, SPP Kings Investors, LLC, and SPP Investors III, LLC, both Delaware limited liability companies, and Skyline Sansome California Property Investors I, LLC, a California limited liability company, signed a ground lease agreement with GetGo Operating, LLC, regarding property at 580 McClelland Road, Canonsburg, where Kings has stood for years.

Last month, Chuck Stewart of Giant Eagle Inc. submitted a notice of appeal requesting variances for parking lot setbacks, loading zones and other setback encroachments at 580 McClelland, where he planned to build a one-story convenience store with parking and gas pumps.

The proposed GetGo facility was more than 6,800 square feet, more than 2,800 square feet larger than the current zoning ordinance permits. Stewart requested the variances due to the plaza’s layout and current zoning ordinances.

Giant Eagle did not comment on the situation and a representative from King’s did not return phone calls Thursday.

North Strabane Township said the GetGo project could be approved at a later date if site plans were adjusted.
