Canton Township, fire department to meet

By Katherine Mansfield staff Writer mansfield@observer-Reporter.Com 1 min read

Canton Township addressed issues with the fire department during Wednesday evening’s regular supervisors meeting.

Last month, the township sent a letter to Canton Township Volunteer Fire & Rescue members announcing the immediate suspension of funding after the township learned the fire company might close in December.

Township manager Stephanie Pettit said the township has not suspended funding yet. The letter was intended “just to get some talking going,” she said.

Supervisors said Wednesday they will meet with fire department representatives in an executive session before the middle of November. The date has not been set.

Whether or not the fire department will close in December is unknown, but “we’re working to make sure that’s not going to happen,” Pettit said.

Also Wednesday, supervisors voted to approve Howard “Butch” Main’s resignation as road master, after 49 years of service. Main remains on the board of supervisors.
