Washington attorney Gary Sweat has been selected to serve as Washington County’s next solicitor for the Board of Commissioners.

Commissioner Nick Sherman and commissioner-elect Electra Janis announced Sweat’s appointment Thursday in a joint press release as the two Republicans prepare to take control of the board next week alongside Democratic Commissioner Larry Maggi.

Sweat will replace Jana Grimm, who is leaving her position as solicitor at the end of the month before the new board takes office during the swearing-in ceremony Tuesday morning and convenes later in the day for its reorganization meeting.

Sweat is a 1970 graduate of Avella High School and has lived in Washington County all of his life. He attended Syracuse University for a double major in economics and history, and later attended the Syracuse University College of Law, where he graduated in 1977 with honors. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association and Washington County Bar Association.
