A woman was hospitalized for smoke inhalation following a fire on the second floor of this Elizabeth Street house.

A Canton Township woman was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital Monday night after a second-story bedroom caught fire.

Canton Township Fire Department Chief Chuck LaBella said firefighters responded to 3 Elizabeth St. at about 10:40 p.m. and fire was showing in an upstairs window.

Next-door neighbor Teresa Denman said she and her husband could smell something burning and warned their neighbors.

“We told them their house was on fire,” Denman said.

The two women at home at the time were downstairs when the fire started and were able to get outside. LaBella said a 21-year-old woman suffered “real bad smoke inhalation” and was flown from the scene. According to LaBella, she was staying at the house temporarily and has since been released from the hospital.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire before it could spread.

“It was confined to the one bedroom, but it had smoke and water damage throughout the house,” LaBella said.

The state police fire marshal is investigating the fire to determine a cause.

South Strabane, North Franklin and Washington fire departments also responded.
