Washington woman charged with assault following I-70 crash
A Washington woman involved in a vehicular accident Sunday on Interstate 70 is accused of assaulting multiple first responders.
Krista Dorothy Nelson, 31, was charged by state police Monday with four felonies of aggravated assault. The charges stem from a crash in which Nelson’s vehicle rolled over at about 8:40 p.m. near the Jessop Place exit in the eastbound lanes of I-70.
Police describe Nelson as “visibly intoxicated” in the criminal complaint. She is accused of shoving an EMT multiple times while trying to get inside an ambulance where her 1-year-old son was being treated.
Nelson was transported from the scene to Washington Hospital. According to the complaint, after arriving at the hospital Nelson grabbed an EMT’s radio microphone and pulled it around his neck.
According to court documents, Nelson kicked a state trooper and a Washington Hospital officer in the knees while they were taking her into custody.
Nelson also faces misdemeanor charges of simple assault and resisting arrest.
She was arraigned Monday morning before District Judge Mark Wilson, who sent her to the Washington County jail on $25,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. April 10.
