Eight students, bus driver injured in crash
A school bus accident Thursday afternoon injured the driver and eight Fort Cherry High School students who were on board.
The accident occurred about 2:36 p.m. at the intersection of Westland Road and First Street in Mt. Pleasant Township
Two of the students were flown from the scene to Pittsburgh. Friday morning, Mt. Pleasant police Chief Matthew Tharp said the students remained in serious condition.
According to a statement from Fort Cherry School District Superintendent Thomas Samosky, the students attend Western Area Career and Technology Center. Thursday was the first day of school for Western Area students.
Tharp said the accident remains under investigation, and did not provide details about how it occurred. When first responders arrived the bus was off road in a field.
The other six students were transported to local hospitals for treatment or evaluation. The driver, a woman who Tharp did not identify, was also hospitalized.
“We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the first responders who arrived quickly at the scene and provided immediate care and assistance. Their professionalism and dedication are truly appreciated by our entire school community,” Samosky’s statement reads.
Mt. Pleasant police continue to investigate the accident. State police are assisting the investigation with accident reconstruction, according to Tharp.
Also responding to the scene was Mt. Pleasant Township Fire Department and Fort Cherry Ambulance Service.
