Local colleges are greeting both new and returning students for the start of a new school year.

Washington & Jefferson College is welcoming its largest incoming class since its founding in 1781. The incoming class of 473 students includes first-year, transfer, and graduate students, as well as 36 students in the inaugural nursing program.

The school’s matriculation ceremony, which marks the start of each student’s academic career, was held Monday as students participated in the traditional crossing of the seal before beginning classes Tuesday.

Waynesburg University held its matriculation ceremony Friday as the university begins its 175th anniversary year.

Freshmen moved into the residence halls Thursday while upperclassmen moved in Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, freshmen took part in a variety of service projects throughout Greene County. Classes started Monday.

Welcome Weekend ’24 took place over the weekend at PennWest California.

First-year and transfer students moved into residence halls Friday while upperclassmen moved in Saturday.

Other weekend events included team-building activities, a block party, a performance by comedian/magician John Cassidy and an ice cream social.

Classes began Monday.
