Route 40 in Washington was closed for more than eight hours Friday after a domestic dispute turned into a lengthy standoff with police.

Washington police were called to the 700 block of East Maiden Street about 5:30 p.m. Friday for the domestic call, and eventually Washington County’s SWAT team was dispatched as a standoff ensued.

Police closed that section of Route 40 in the city while they tried to coax the man to leave the residence.

The standoff ended about 2 a.m. Saturday when the suspect, who was not immediately identified, surrendered to police without incident, Washington County District Attorney Jason Walsh said. Walsh said the man was charged with terroristic threats and simple assault.

No one was injured in the standoff.
