Emergency crews were dispatched to eastern Cumberland Township in Greene County on Friday afternoon for a report of a possible downed aircraft, although a lengthy search of the area failed to locate any signs of a plane crash.

Greene County Emergency Management Director Rich Policz said a person called 911 about 1 p.m. and reported a possible airplane crash near the Monongahela River between Nemacolin and the defunct Hatfield power plant.

Multiple fire departments, police officers and sheriff’s deputies spent more than two hours searching the area, even using a helicopter to look from the air and a rescue boat to scour the river, but found no signs of any wreckage.

Policz was unsure if the caller was mistaken about what occurred, or if they would resume the search later if they received additional information.

“We’re going to talk here and decide later,” Policz said. “I can tell you, physically, we’re not finding anything.”
