The Bishop Canevin hockey team held its Winter Classic Feb. 7 at South Park Outdoor Rink with all proceeds benefiting the Crabtree-Kovacicek Veterans House at Washington City Mission, named in honor of U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Ryan J. Kovacicek. Kovacicek, of Avella, was killed in Iraq on July 10, 2005, at the age of 22. The event featured raffle baskets, a 50/50 drawing and a middle school hockey game. The main event was an exhibition matchup between two undefeated teams – Bishop Canevin and Chartiers Valley, won by Bishop Canevin 5-3. Kovacicek lettered in hockey while a student at Bishop Canevin.
