Motorcycle run honors Avella native
The third annual Freddie Shaffer Memorial Ride is scheduled for July 27, honoring the former Avella native.
The ride starts at Steel City Harley Davidson, 1375 Washington Rd, Washington, and ends at Rough Cut Tavern in Burgettstown.
Money raised goes to the Freddie Shaffer Scholarship Fund, which awarded $3,800 scholarships each to Avella High School graduates Eric Evans and Kathryn Smitsky.
Shaffer died in 2021 at the age of 46 after a brief illness. He loved outdoor activities such as camping and fishing, as well as off-roading on his side by side and riding his motorcycle.
He worked as a bartender and organized country music concerts.
Dozens of local businesses have contributed gift cards, merchandise, gift baskets and professional services to be auctioned off at the event. There will also be food and live music.
Registration takes place from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and the ride starts at 1 p.m. Cost is $20 for the rider, $10 for passenger.
