Emergency crews spent more than an hour extricating the driver of this vehicle Thursday morning.

Four people, including two firefighters, were injured as a result of a head-on collision involving a garbage truck and car in Chartiers Township early Thursday.

Chartiers Township Fire Department Chief Fred Simpson said crews were called about 5 a.m. to the 2400 block of North Main Street Extension, where the crash occurred.

According to Simpson, firefighters from his department and South Strabane worked more than an hour to extricate the driver from the car. The driver was transported by ambulance to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. The driver’s identity was not immediately available.

The driver of the garbage truck was taken to Washington Hospital with a possible broken arm, according to Simpson.

Two firefighters were injured during the rescue operation. Simpson said a member of his department was treated at the scene for a heat-related issue and returned to work.

South Strabane Fire Department Chief Jordan Cramer said one of the department’s firefighters was treated at Washington Hospital for a minor injury.

“He had an injury to his hand that occurred while they were working to cut the vehicle apart,” Cramer said. “He has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.”

Chartiers Township police are investigating the crash.
