A fire that injured one person occurred early Monday at Hamtom Road in Nottingham Township.

A couple and five of their grandchildren escaped from a house fire early Monday morning in Nottingham Township.

Finleyville Fire Department Chief Jacob Lawrence said crews were called shortly before 2 a.m. to the 200 block of Hamtom Road. Upon arrival firefighters found the two-story home was fully engulfed in flames.

All seven people inside the home were outside when first responders arrived.

“They were sleeping. The grandkids actually notified the grandparents of the fire,” Lawrence said.

According to Lawerence, a man suffered minor burn injuries and was taken to a hospital by a family member and later released.

Lawrence said the home’s location, on top of a hill accessible via a long driveway, made getting water to the fire difficult.

“We were on scene until 7 a.m. We had some assistance from the Nottingham Township road crew,” Lawrence said.

The fire marshal is investigating. It is not known how the fire started.

Also responding to the fire were fire departments from North Strabane, Valley Inn, Peters Township, Library, Bentleyville, Ellsworth and South Strabane.
