Washington man arrested in deputy’s assault

1 min read

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Washington man Monday after he was accused of hitting a deputy.

Joseph Somerville, 24, faces felony charges of aggravated assault flight to avoid apprehension.

According to the criminal complaint, at about 3:15 p.m. Monday, sheriff deputies attempted to arrest Somerville at the Washington County Courthouse on an arrest warrant issued in Belmont County, Ohio, for a felony assault charge.

The sheriff’s department said Somerville struck a deputy in the chest and then fled on foot. A South Strabane officer was able to apprehend him soon after, according to the complaint.

Somerville was arraigned Monday night before District Judge Phillippe Melograne, who sent him to the Washington County jail without bond. Court records indicate Melongrane denied bond due to Somerville being a flight risk.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 24.
