Longtime Donora volunteer firefighter Rhys Taylor died Monday at the age of 24.
Taylor, president of the Donora Volunteer Fire Company for the last five years, died as a result of health issues, according to borough Mayor Don Pavelko.
“He was a good, good kid,” Pavelko said, noting that Taylor was a student of his daughter’s in elementary school. “She’s devastated. The whole fire company is devastated,” he said. “He was a definite asset to Donora. Over the last couple of years he’s gone through a lot. He never, ever complained. Young people like him are few and far between.”
Taylor had been a member of the fire department since the age of 14 and began a career as an emergency medical technician in 2018.
Taylor was elected as constable for Donora in the last election, but never had the opportunity to serve due to his health issues.
A black wreath was placed outside the fire station along with his helmet and gear.
“He was a wonderful kid,” said Cindy Brice, council president. “He was well-liked, well-respected, a volunteer in our community. It truly is a loss for Donora.”
