Vampires, dragons and orcs! Oh My!
Eva K. Bowlby Public Library hosts Dungeons & Dragons sessions
Barbarians, bards, vampires, dragons and more have started gathering at the Eva K. Bowlby Public Library.
For almost six months, the Waynesburg library has been hosting Dungeons & Dragons sessions on Saturdays, and as of December, a weekly Friday session is offered, too.
The interactive social strategy game involves players, or “adventurers” as they are called, who create heroes and work together to tell stories as they cast spells, attack threats and level up during their epic quests. A Dungeon Master heads the game, acting as a referee of sorts, and guides the story.
“Since D&D is fantasy based, the goals could be anything from searching for a lost treasure from a forgotten civilization to fighting magical creatures like vampires, werewolves or dragons,” said Matthew Desrosiers, the library’s communications manager.
Desrosiers said the number of people who can play in a D&D session at one time is usually dependent on how many people the Dungeon Master feels that they can accommodate. The groups at the library will usually have between six and eight people, he said.
“The thing that is most fun about D&D is that it is an interactive story where the action that you take directly impacts how the story and the game itself will proceed,” Desrosiers said. “Most of the fun is found when you have a Dungeon Master that is able to roll with the changes caused by the players in order to make the story that they’re crafting all the more memorable.”
The library decided to offer the sessions after people expressed interest during the past few years. It wasn’t until September that someone approached the staff who was willing to act as a Dungeon Master.
Desrosiers encouraged people to come participate for “a social experience and to enjoy a new experience.”
The games take place at 12:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays at the library.
