Menards construction slips out of 2024

Construction is not expected to begin this year on a Menards home improvement store in South Strabane Township.
Township manager Jeff Ziegler said Tuesday that the company recently told the township the project in the Old Mill plaza is not on its 2024 construction schedule.
A spokesperson for Menards declined to provide comment.
When the South Strabane board of supervisors approved the project in January 2023, Brandon Stanick, Ziegler’s predecessor, suggested the store could be open this year.
“We expected them to begin construction in the spring,” Ziegler said, adding that the township is not certain of Menards’ current timetable to begin work on the site.
Menards has plans for a 200,000-square-foot building in the rear of the Old Mill shopping center, near the Berry Road entrance. It would include a 40,000-square-foot drive-thru lumberyard.
Menards is not the only retail business planning to move into the Old Mill. Dick’s Sporting Goods is in the process of moving from its current location in Strabane Square.
Ziegler said Dick’s is preparing the site across from Sportsman’s Warehouse for construction and has a building permit. It was not clear when work will be completed.
Dick’s did not reply to a request for comment.
