For the third straight year, AHN Field (Canon-McMillan Stadium) in Canonsburg will host a Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K.
This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday at 8 a.m. with the race beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, based in Staten Island, N.Y., is a charitable organization founded in tribute to New York City Fire Department firefighter Stephen Siller, who died Sept. 11, 2001.
Its mission is to provide mortgage-free homes to America’s military and first responders. The foundation also builds specially adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders and is committed to eradicating veteran homelessness.
“We have a number of veteran groups that are coming in to support the veterans and offer assistance to them,” Tony Colaizzo, volunteer race director, said of the 5K.
Colaizzo added that there will be many law enforcement agencies on hand to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
There are a number of activities planned along with the race, including games for the kids. The JCraiger Band will be providing entertainment.
Colaizzo said Tuesday that about 550-660 people are expected to participate by either walking or running.
The event’s website showed that as of Tuesday morning $69,635 of the goal of $150,000 had been raised.
People may register at runsignup.com until Friday or at the event Saturday morning.
“We laid some seeds this year that are going to pay off big time,” Colaizzo said. “We’re real excited about that. We’ve got the (Washington) Rotary Club, we’ve got the churches involved. We’ve got some other business groups that are showing interest that are going to be big for us. The schools are participating more as well.”
