Washington man charged following standoff, firing shots at police
A Washington man faces multiple charges after he allegedly fired shots at police officers during a standoff last week.
Washington police charged Martin Walter Klick, 67, Wednesday with 16 felonies of aggravated assault, as well as misdemeanors of terroristic threats, obstructing law enforcement, simple assault and prohibited possession of a firearm.
According to the criminal complaint, at about 5 p.m. Aug. 30 police went to Klick’s apartment at 730 E. Maiden St.
A woman who lives with Klick reported that Klick had made unwanted sexual advances towards her, and threatened to shoot her and her daughter.
She fled the home with her daughter while Klick allegedly began to load a firearm with ammunition.
Police closed Route 40 around the apartment building and attempted to coax Klick outside. State police and a Beaver County SWAT team also responded.
After several hours of Klick refusing to communicate with officers or listen to their commands, police obtained a search warrant to enter the building.
According to the complaint, Klick fired his weapon at police and hit a SWAT vehicle. Officers were able to take him into custody in the apartment’s kitchen.
Klick was initially charged that day with misdemeanor terroristic threats, but those charges were withdrawn. He was arraigned on the new set of charges Wednesday afternoon before District Judge Kelly Stewart, who sent him to the Washington County jail without bond.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Sept. 23
