A West Virginia man died early Tuesday when he crashed on Interstate 70 in Washington County.

Christopher Aaron Clutter, 35, of Wheeling, was driving west on the interstate in Donegal Township near the Claysville exit when his vehicle left the roadway and crashed, Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said in a news release.

The crash occurred between 4 a.m. and 8:22 a.m., when the wreckage was apparently discovered, according to Warco.

Clutter, who was the only person in the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, Warco said. The cause and manner of his death are pending an autopsy.

State police are investigating the crash and were assisted at the scene by firefighters from Claysville and West Alexander. State police at the barracks near Washington did not immediately release details on the crash.
