Police determine threat to school districts to be non-credible

2 min read

A threat to three Washington County school districts was found to not be credible by police.

Canon-McMillan School District Superintendent Greg Taranto wrote in a letter to parents that school officials had received a screenshot of a social media post that referenced a threat towards an Ohio school district, but the original post had been edited to include the statement “canon mac, Trinity, and Chartiers are next,” referring to Trinity Area School District and Chartiers-Houston School District.

According to Taranto, the district became aware of the post Tuesday morning as students were arriving for school. He said the district notified North Strabane police who investigated the matter. North Strabane, Canonsburg and Cecil police all dispatched extra officers to school buildings.

“We want to emphasize that the North Strabane Police Department has assessed this threat as non-credible. While we take every potential threat seriously, it is important to remain calm and trust in the expertise of our law enforcement agencies,” Taranto wrote to district parents.

Taranto asks that people be “vigilant and proactive” with reporting threatening content on the internet to police.

“Sharing such information or commenting on it online does not contribute to resolving the situation, and may only serve to create unnecessary panic among our students,” the letter reads.
