Teresa Burroughs, executive director of the LeMoyne Community Center, was honored, along with the center, at Thursday’s meeting of Washington Council.

The efforts of Teresa Burroughs and the LeMoyne Community Center were recognized at Thursday’s meeting of the City of Washington Council.

Burroughs, the center’s executive director, received the Pride in Washington Award and a proclamation was given to the center.

“The LeMoyne Center does more in this community than what people even know for our young kids,” said Mayor JoJo Burgess. “Everything that you do does not go unnoticed.”

Burroughs said the success and achievements of the LeMoyne Community Center are a collaborative effort.

“We’re all very passionate about what we do and how we do it. We take honor and pride in serving the community and growing the community as a whole,” she said.

Burroughs called the center a “staple in the community,” and noted expansions in services to better help children, men, women and older adults.

At the end of the month, the LeMoyne Community Center will begin an expansion, Burroughs said. The work includes the addition of three classrooms, expansion of the kitchen and enhancements to the entrance and office space at the facility at 200 N. Forrest Ave.

The work carries a price tag of about $350,000, funded by the America Rescue Plan Act.

The physical expansion will lead to another expansion of programs, Burroughs said.

Councilman Ken Westcott touted the work being done at the center.

“It wasn’t that long ago that the LeMoyne Center was on life support,” he said. “What you’ve done to bring it back to life is amazing.”

The LeMoyne Community Center has been in operation since 1956. It serves people of all ages, but is primarily focused on the need for youth to have a positive creative outlet.
