Canonsburg council OKs tree removal contract

In preparation for an upcoming U.S. Army Corps of Engineers inspection of Chartiers Creek, Canonsburg council approved a contract for about $5,000 Monday to A&S Landscaping of Canonsburg for the removal of trees along the embankment.
“This is a longstanding obligation that we have as a borough to protect the creek banks for the Corps of Engineers’ flood protection program that they did in the 1970s,” explained Rich Russo, council president. “We’ve been getting unsatisfactory inspections, but between the contract with A&S, the recent remediation of weeds and chemical spraying of the banks, I think we’re looking at a favorable inspection at the end of August.”
Council also unanimously approved the reassignment of $14,491 in demolition funds from the 2024 Community Development Block Grant funding to the reconstruction of Taylor Drive.
In a corresponding move, council also unanimously approved a $10,000 contribution for Canonsburg Streets financing to be distributed via the Redevelopment Authority of Washington County, also to be used for the Taylor Drive project.
Also Monday, council moved its Sept. 1 agenda meeting to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 2 due to Labor Day.
