The left front tire of a tri-axle truck became stuck in a sink hole that opened up on Seventh Street in Charleroi Monday afternoon.

Borough Manager Joe Manning said the truck was carrying supplies for a demolition of the building at 703 Fallowfield Ave.

“They were delivering the excavating machine when the truck that was delivering it went in the hole,” Manning said. “When the tow truck came and lifted the truck out, you could see a void that was about seven feet deep under there. It was nothing but a void covered by asphalt.”

Manning did not know what caused the sinkhole.

“We’ll be working with the authority of the borough or Charleroi to make all of the repairs,” Manning said. “It’s kind of hard to assign a cause, but everything beneath the road surface is washed away. ”

Fire Chief Robert Whiten Jr. said his department was called, but there wasn’t much firefighters could do.

“We knew there was not a thing we could do with that truck with its weight,” he said.

Bujanowski Towing Service of North Charleroi lifted the truck out of the hole.

Until repairs are made, the street will remain closed. A metal plate was placed over the hole.

There were no injuries, and Manning said there wasn’t significant damage to the truck.
