Iron Senergy, which owns Cumberland Mine pictured in this 2018 file photo, is threatening to close the coal mining operation in Greene County.

Negotiations are continuing between workers at the Cumberland Mine and owners Iron Senergy after miners voted down a tentative collective bargaining agreement, the United Mine Workers Association said Tuesday.

The UMWA had negotiated the tentative agreement on behalf of workers last month. Union members voted the agreement down after hearing a contract explanation.

Erin Bates, spokeswoman for UMWA, said she could not comment on details such as the vote or the nature of the miners’ objections to the proposed contract.

Bates said negotiations are active and ongoing.

“We’re back at the bargaining table for that one,” she said.

The UMWA represents about 500 miners at the Cumberland Mine, which uses longwall mining.
