Washington & Jefferson begins new school year
Classes for the fall semester at Washington & Jefferson College began Tuesday after a full schedule of events that included everything from move-in to matriculation.
The matriculation ceremony for the college’s record-breaking class of 603 first-year students was held Monday and included the traditional crossing of the seal at Old Main, which signifies the students’ induction into the W&J community.
Students also took part in a number of community service activities Saturday, working with 13 local nonprofits, contributing 1,400 hours of community service with more than 700 volunteers.
“We have a day committed to service, community and connection, explained Ryan Smith, director of student engagement. “I think it’s huge for the students to get to know where they live. We hope they continue to connect with the local nonprofits and community to reinvest some time back into the space where they live.”
The college also funded a Taste of Washington lunch featuring 12 local restaurants and a community fair with more than 30 local nonprofit organizations to give the students another opportunity to engage with the area.
