Canonsburg facing slight tax increase
Canonsburg council is poised to approve a 2026 budget that includes a slight tax increase for residents.
When it meets Dec. 8, council is expected to vote on a $6,568,925 spending plan that calls for a .2 mill increase, raising millage in the general fund from 3.84 to 4.04 mills. The total millage is 5.43 mills. The average homeowner will face a tax increase of $27.
Council President Rich Russo said council continued discussion concerning health care for borough employees.
The employees will be presented with plans from UPMC and Blue Cross Blue Shield, the current carrier. A meeting for the employees is scheduled for Thursday.
“We’re just looking to try and do the best we can with premium savings,” Russo said. “There will be no change in benefits, no change in employee contributions, copays, deductibles. Perhaps switching to UPMC will save the borough some money going forward in our budget.”
Another agenda item is considering a grant for the Canonsburg Educational & Cultural Institute (CECI) in that organization’s development of a community center at the site of the former Canonsburg Middle School.
The Canon-McMillan School District sold the school at 25 E. College St. for $500,000.
“The dollar amount (of the grant) will be decided next week,” Russo said. “We will approve some form of economic grant to assist them with their build-out of the auditorium. That’s another big piece for us.”
