Canonsburg council approved its 2026 budget that calls for a slight tax increase but the spending plan may have to be reopened.

A $6,568,925 spending plan was unanimously approved Monday that included a .2 mill tax increase that raises millage in the general fund from 3.84 to 4.04 mills. The total millage is 5.43 mills. If the budget stands as approved, the average homeowner will realize an annual tax increase of $27.

However, there may have to be an adjustment concerning the borough’s health-care plan. There have been discussions about switching coverage from Blue Cross Blue Shield to UPMC. A motion considering a change was tabled Monday.

The borough’s public works department and the union representing that department filed a grievance over the proposed switch in health care, necessitating the vote to table the matter.

“There will be discussions to resolve that grievance,” said Rich Russo, council president. “If that grievance causes the budget to be out of balance, then the budget may get reopened in January if that grievance causes us to purchase health care that is over budget.”

Council also unanimously approved a $100,000 grant to the Canonsburg Educational and Cultural Institute for the development of a community center at the former Canonsburg Middle School, specifically a theater in the facility.

The Canon-McMillan School District sold the building at 25 E. College St. for $500,000.
