Canonsburg looks to reestablish parking authority

Canonsburg is looking to reestablish its parking authority.

Council President Rich Russo explained that the borough once had a parking authority, which is helpful in securing funding for parking-related projects.

“The primary purpose of that parking authority is to continue to concentrate and build out our parking for the business community, customers or folks visiting Canonsburg,” Russo said. “(The previous parking authority) was established very early on when we were establishing parking lots in Canonsburg to help finance them. It went away after several years because the work had been done. Now we kind of find ourselves back in that phase of redevelopment and revitalization where we’re in need of some funding to maybe do another parking lot on the Jefferson Avenue and West Pike corridor.”

Russo anticipates the authority consisting of about five members. The matter is expected to be on the agenda when council meets Jan. 13.

Also up for vote at the meeting is the approval of a stop sign on Hutchinson Avenue at Hawthorne Street, facing southbound traffic on Hutchinson.

“That’s a public safety issue that we’re going to finally address,” Russo said. “There’s been a lot of speeding at that intersection.”

Council also is expected to approve a replacement for Rob Luksis for a five-year term on the Canonsburg-Houston Joint Sewage Authority. Luksis had been chairman of the authority board.

Two candidates – Tim Solobay and Bob Osterman – will be considered.

Potential board reappointments scheduled for Jan. 13 include Tony Trona for a three-year term on the zoning hearing board and Leanna Coyle for a three-year term on the parks and recreation board.

Russo also said Crawford Street will be paved. The $337,000 cost will be covered by the borough’s Community Development Block Grant program.
