Canonsburg council looks to address leaking in borough building alcove

By Paul Paterra 2 min read

An issue with flooding in the alcove at the Canonsburg Borough Building will be addressed.

The uncovered parking area has experienced leaking, causing flooding in the police department storage and evidence rooms, ruining some items in those rooms.

Council voted unanimously Monday to award the project to AMS Construction and Remodeling of Waynesburg for $86,300.

“The alcove is a section in the center of our building that’s uncovered,” explained Rich Russo, council president. “It’s been giving us flooding issues into the police department. They have a working area down there where they have computers. It also has been affecting the evidence room. That’s been going on for years. So, we finally were able to put together some specifications through an engineering firm for a remedy to that area. It’s basically to lift it up, remove the concrete surface, replace it and do some underground drainage.”

Council also unanimously approved the transfer of a liquor license from Lenhart’s Tavern in Charleroi to Bell Spirits LLC, at 14 N. Jefferson Ave.

“To us, it was just another good piece of news about a business coming to Canonsburg,” Russo said. “We’ve been on this campaign about revitalization.”

A public hearing on the transfer was held before Monday’s council meeting.

Council also unanimously approved a stop sign to curtail speeding on Hutchinson Avenue at Hawthorne Street, facing southbound traffic on Hutchinson.

Also, Tim Solobay was approved to replace Rob Luksis for a five-year term on the Canonsburg-Houston Joint Sewage Authority. Luksis had been chairman of the authority board.

Council also approved Tony Trona for a three-year term on the zoning hearing board and Leanna Coyle for a three-year term on the parks and recreation board.
