Family escapes from Lower Tyrone Township house fire

A family of four and their three animals escaped a weekend house fire uninjured in Lower Tyrone Township.
Firefighters were called to the house on Hickory Square Road shortly before 8:45 a.m. Saturday after a caller told emergency dispatchers that the structure was filling with smoke, Fayette County Emergency Management spokeswoman Susan Griffith said.
Four adults, along with two dogs and a cat were able to escape the blaze injured, Griffith said.
The extent of the damage to the house was not immediately known, although the state police fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate what caused the blaze.
Fire crews were on scene for a few hours battling the blaze, and electricity had to be disconnected in the area to aid firefighters. Dawson firefighters were assisted at the scene by departments from DL&V, Everson, Perry Township and Connellsville Township. The Dawson Volunteer Fire Department could not be reached for comment Monday for more information on the blaze.
The family is displaced and being assisted by the American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania.
