The state Department of Transportation plans to close a section of Sugar Run Road near Venetia to rebuild a bridge that carries traffic over Peters Creek.

PennDOT next week will close the Sugar Run Road bridge on the municipal boundary between Peters and Nottingham townships that connects Venetia Road to Mingo Church Road to perform deck replacement and general maintenance.

The closure will begin June 16, and the work will continue until late August, when the bridge is expected to reopen to traffic. PennDOT’s detour will take motorists onto Route 88 through Finleyville.

The bridge, which was built in 1939 and carries more than 1,800 vehicles a day, was reduced to a 20-ton weight limit May 28. The work is being performed by Allison Park Contractors, Inc. and will cost about $150,000.
