Washington City Council approved a conditional use application for a new group care facility.

The motion for a Supportive Concepts facility at 370 Jefferson Ave. was approved by three of the four council members in attendance at Thursday’s council meeting. Councilman Andrew Callan abstained because he was not at the conditional use hearing on the matter held before the council meeting. Mayor JoJo Burgess monitored the meeting by phone.

Only a few citizens attended the hearing, and no opposition to the plan was offered.

Supportive Concepts, which already has a facility on Walnut Street in Washington, provides services and support for individuals with behavioral health needs and/or intellectual disabilities. Grishma Solonki, director of Supportive Concepts’ mental health program, said, “I’m very excited that we’re able to move forward with the program that we want to build for Washington County,” she said. “There’s definitely a need and now we have the opportunity to serve more individuals.”

Other moves approved by council included:

Hiring Dennis Amon as the public works superintendent, effective June 16. In a corresponding move council approved Amon’s resignation as a maintenance repair worker.

Promoting police Cpls. Brad Resnick and Rodger Frazee to the rank of sergeant.

Promoting Officers Bill Dennison and Nick Powell to the rank of corporal.
